Poem of the week

Mia's lovely illustration was chosen this week. Awesome job, Mia!

I Love …

I love to dance and sing and play,
I love to chat and talk.
I love to run and skip and jump,
I also love to walk.

I love to eat fish fingers,
And drink cold icy milk.
I love to read and paint and draw,
With paints and crayons and chalk.

Last week's poem was "Night Creatures".

Night Creatures
Night- time creatures are
Growling and grunting.
Night-time creatures are
Howling and hunting.

Night-time nibblers
Like mice and rats.
Night-time flyers
Like owls and bats.

Night-time hoppers
Like toads and frogs.
Night-time howlers,
Like wolves and dogs.

Night-time sliders,
Like snails and slugs.
Night-time munchers
Like bookworm bugs.

Hunting for food
Or hunting for friends.
Out in the night,
Till the night-time ends.

This was Olivia's illustration. What a super job!

This was Remy's illustration. What beautiful drawings!

The Coastguard

Peter, Mary's dad, came to visit Room 12 to tell us about the important job that the Coastguard does in our community. We learnt that they are here to keep us safe. They help people at sea that are in danger from sinking or if they run out of petrol. They also rescue people from the sea, like the man that fell off his jet ski. They need powerful boats, a chart or map, a compass and a radio. Peter told us that it is important to wear life jackets when we are at sea and we should make sure that they fit properly. We also found out that the coastguard works with the police and firemen. We loved the pictures of the boats and the helicopters. Thanks for teaching us so much, Peter!

Firefighters visit Room 12

Two firefighters,Vaughan and Adam, from Silverdale Fire Department came to Room 12 to tell us all about fire safety and what they do in their job. They take risks every day and they are an important part of our community.
These were some important rules we should remember:

Every house should have smoke alarms.
Check the batteries once a year.
Every family should have an escape route in case of fire.
Meet at the letterbox if you have escaped from a burning house.
Don't play with matches and lighters.
Know your street address and the closest cross road.
Dial 111 in an emergency.
Stop, drop and roll.

Thanks for the great advice! We will all try to be firewise!

Teddy Bear's Picnic

Teddy Bear's Picnic on PhotoPeach

Room 12 invited the rest of our Albatross Community to have a Teddy Bear’s Picnic. We had heaps of fun. Our mums and dads packed a delicious picnic lunch for us, we took blankets and off we went to the big adventure playground to have heaps of fun! Some teddies chatted to others, some shared cookies and some even went down the slide. What brave teddies! Jed organised a soccer game and we had heaps of boys and girls running around the field. I hope the teddies enjoyed themselves. I know they were tired because they came back to class for a nap on the couch. What a super day!

Pirates Ahoy

One spooky night in the Witching Hour, I heard tiptoeing in my room. When I put my head up, I saw a pirate who had a stripy coat, his pants were baggy and rotten and his hook was as sharp as a pin. When I looked at his evil eyes they are dark red and just then I heard “a……ha ha ha. I will take over all of America!” Then he used his hands. He electrocuted me twice just keeping his hands still. When I closed my eyes and I opened them I was in a different world. I’m on a pirate galleon tied in a rope. One pirate said “Walk the plank!” I slowly walked backwards and when I was at the end, I jumped off. I was flying and then there was a big bang and I was back in my bed.
Hayley

Once upon a time there was a scary pirate called Captain Hook. His boots were black with a picture of some gold treasure on it. He had strong men as well. He wasn’t scared of anything. He must be brave. He had a fake leg. He was very tall and his hook was as sharp as a knife. His enemy was Captain Claw. Captain Claw has been trying to steal the treasure for many years. So the captain is looking out for him. He commanded his men, “Put the treasure down on the deck!” He told the other men “Make a trap!” The men thought for a moment and in their head they said, “What kind of trap could we make?” One of the men said, “How about a net!” The others said, “A great idea.” The captain was looking out for Captain Claw and if he sees him he would say, “Alert” and the men would pull the rope and the net would come down. Then Captain Claw came and he saw the treasure and he said, “I could get the treasure.” They heard their captain call “Alert”, so they pulled the rope and he got stuck in the net and then the captain came and he shouted, “Ah ah ah!” They dropped him in the water and that was the end of Captain Claw.
Anya

The captain woke up and he heard a noise and he heard the sound of the big black boots. He got out of his big bed and tiptoed to the door. He saw a robber with big black baggy pants and a suit and it scared him and he went back to bed to hide. Then he went into the cabin and wanted to get his map and he found it and it was in his drawer. Then the next day it was gone. He shouted, “Where is my map?” They searched and searched. They made a race to see the ‘X’ marks the spot and guess who found it? Yip, the robber did. The robber felt rich.
Jayden

Captain Riley had a t-shirt and boots and pants, a sword and an eye patch and a hat. Captain Riley was asleep. His crew blew up the ship. Before they blew up the ship, they got the map. His crew went on another ship. Captain Riley jumped on to the ship before the ship blew up. The captain’s ship blew up.
Riley

Thump!!! I saw big pink boots. It was Captain Poppy coming towards me. She had brown eyes like the night and very messy gold hair! I wondered why she was coming towards me. She had a scar on her chin and a sword poked down her thick black belt. Also, a brown and silver strong musket!!! She looked angry and had a black eye patch with a cross bone on it! One day, the captain’s treasure was stolen by Captain Tyler L. and her crew! This made the captain furious! She had to get it back! But the crew and Captain Tyler L. were already gone, traveling far away to Egypt, stealing more treasure! So they had to travel to Egypt too, to get their treasure back immediately! They traveled for four hours. Finally they got there. With Poppy’s telescope she looked through it for Captain Tyler L. Finally she found them in a straw house! She told the crew to stay there and so she tiptoed up on the ship, into the cabin and stole the treasure back!
Poppy

Captain Monkey is a psycho captain living on a dark, spooky, freaky ship called “Freaks Treasure”. His pants are ripped. There is a huge scar on his face. He bellows to the crew, “Give me the gold or it’s off with your head!” He uses muskets and swords, pistols and guns. I’d tell you, there’s a big chest full of weapons in his galleon. One day, Captain Monkey was lying in the cabin bed when all of a sudden, BANG! “W – what was th – that bang?” he stammered. “I think we should go find out,” said Fourth Mate Chocolate Coin. “Let’s search the ship,” said Peg Polkadot. The pirates searched and then, “Wait!” yelled Second Mate Mr Grab, “I’ve found something black!” Let’s go look at what Mr Grab’s found,” said Captain Monkey. The crew hurried over. “I wonder what that black shadowy, moving thing is,” said Third Mate Ben Buckle. It opened the door and bellowed, “BOO!” The banger turned out to be Bad Jelly the Witch! The way to get even was throw her out of the ship. To solve the problem, the pirates tied Badjelly’s hands together, lifted her up and carried her to the edge of the deck, lifted her over the railing and dropped her into the sea. Problem solved.
Charlotte

One stormy night, a mean, bad pirate walked across the deck. His name was Captain Jack Sparrow. He had a dark, dark black beard. He also had big black boots. He had a black pirate cloak that was so dark. One misty night Captain Jack Sparrow wanted more fantastic treasure. There were bad pirates on his galleon. They started fighting his crew. Captain Jack Sparrow came out and saw his crew fighting the baddies. Then he saw more treasure. His crew started running and stole it.
Jaydee

One night when the captain went to bed, he forgot to get changed. So he hopped out of bed and got changed. By the mirror, he saw he had a big black filthy dirty beard. He also had a cloak that was as dark as night. He also had black boots and puffy pants. One night, when the moon was rising, the captain went to bed. A mean pirate on his galleon decided to steal the treasure map, but the captain caught him. He bellowed, “Ha ha ha, you can’t catch me!” He became a servant but then the captain had a better idea for he had to walk the plank.
Mary

She wears baggy pants, a shiny top and a hat and an earring. She also wears an eye patch. When Captain Atalia was looking through her treasure, the ship sunk into the ocean below the water. The treasure fell off the ship. She found the treasure. She tried to swim to the shore. It was starting to get dark. She fell asleep. In the bright sunny morning, she was on the shore. Then she saw an ‘X’ on the sand. She dug. She found the treasure. It was her old friend. Then she saw a ship with her friend.
Atalia

On a dark and spooky night, I heard a big BANG! I said, “What’s that?” All of a sudden, I saw two big black boots, some puffy pants, a black coat, a scruffy beard, an eye patch with a skull and a hooked hook! It was a pirate! He stomped forward and bellowed, “What are you doing here?” In a scared voice I said, “I, I, I live here.” “Well where’s the money?” demanded the pirate “W-w-what money?” I cried. “Your money!” “Ok, just please don’t hurt me,” I begged. So the pirate took the money and said to his crew, “Come on men, we have some work to do!” So off they went to their ship and sailed to an island and put an ‘X’ next to the money. But when they came back from getting the red paint for the ‘X’, the money was gone! The crew searched everywhere, but they couldn’t find it. The captain said, “Where could it be?” Suddenly they saw a monkey hanging down from a tree. The pirates kept trying to snatch the money and finally they got it.
Mia

Once upon a time there was a pirate called Ty. She was very pretty but she was very mean. Ty has a shiny silver sword and had brown hair and pink hair. She is a very hungry pirate. Room 12 is learning about pirates. Their hooks are as sharp as swords. The pirate’s parrot is screeching all the time. The parrot is very colourful.
Charlee

Once there was a pirate who had two men who were as strong as a giant. The captain is called Captain Monkey. The first crew mate is called RC. The second one is called HP. When the pirates were asleep, another pirate crew came aboard. They made a big racket when they were aboard the ship. Then the pirates woke up. They stomped up to the deck and started to fight. Captain Monkey killed their Captain Sparrow. Captain Sparrow’s crew was so terrified that they ran away.
Hamish H

Once upon a time, there was a pirate who was mean and angry. His name was Captain Cannon. He has a crew of eight. He eats octopus. His clothes are a pirate hat, an eye patch, a black coat, puffy pants, a belt that had a telescope, two gold muskets, two silver swords and some big black boots. In each boot there were two gold muskets. He also steals treasure. One day on the seven seas, Captain Cannon was on his brand new ship. He was planning to go to Snake Rock to steal some treasure but he couldn’t because it was guarded by other pirates. So he went and bought 26 cannons, put them in the ship and loaded them up with the help of his crew. Then off they went. All the ships they found BOOM!!! They blew them up. They got to Snake Rock and they found the treasure and they celebrated.
Matthew

Poem of the week

Matthew's illustration of our poem was chosen this week. We really loved your picture Matthew!

The class also thought that Poppy's and Charlotte's poems were beautifully illustrated. Great work, girls!

Moon in the sky
I look at the moon
In the sky at night.
I look at the moon,
When it’s big and bright.

I look at the moon,
When it’s round
Like a ball,
And I say to the moon,
“Never ever fall!
If you fell from the sky,
It would be a mistake,
For what a horrible hole
You would make!”

Occupational Therapy

Hamish's mum, Brenda, came to talk to us today about what an Occupational Therapist does in our community. She told us that therapists help you to be able to do those everyday things (occupations) which you need and want to do.

We discussed our favourite activities and then we talked about how we would feel if we could not do them anymore if we were injured or hurt. There are so many wonderful ways to help people now so that NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!

Poem of the week

Hayley drew an amazing picture of the world of the Shiver Shark. Look how much detail she added. We thought you illustrated the poem beautifully, Hayley!

The Shiver Shark
Down beneath the water,
Down beneath the waves,
Down beneath the slimy sludge,
There lies an ocean cave,
Deep within the ocean cave,
Deep within the dark,
Deep within its rocky walls,
There lies the shiver shark.

The Shiver shark is waiting,
Where the river sharks all hide,
The shiver shark is waiting ….
And his mouth is open wide!

Don’t go … beneath the water,
Down beneath the waves,
Down beneath the slimy sludge,
Into the ocean cave,
For deep within the ocean cave,
Deep within the dark,
Deep within its rocky walls,
There lies the shiver shark!

Our Playdough Aliens

Room 12 has been learning how to write character descriptions so that the reader can get a good mind picture of what our characters look like. We created playdough aliens and we wrote all about them. We tried to use describing words and similes to add extra detail. I think we did a fantastic job! Have a look ....

My Playdough Alien has a bright blue body and a dark red head. She's got two coloured buttons. She also has yellow lumpy hair. Her eyes are black and she has three of them. Now I can't forget that she has a straw nose, can I? She is the most gentle alien on earth. If you want to see her you have to travel west. She is as big as an owl. Her middle eye is a light bulb. At night, when no one is looking, she can turn invisible. She is size 9. My alien is like a kangaroo because she jumps everywhere. - Alannah

My Playdough Alien is bright turquoise with a big belly button sticking out of him with a diamond on top. He's got a circle body and head. He has one leg as long as a tree and two short ones. He is as small as a germ. He bounces around everywhere even in bed. His favourite thing to do is Art. His arms have yellow and blue stripes. He has got four eyes on his head that move everywhere. He has a circle nose with sparkles on it. He can jump so high, he can jump over a tidal wave. - Hamish H

My Playdough Alien is blue and it feels soft. It's body is shaped like a snowman. He comes from Mars. He is three centimeters tall. He has super powers which are swords, a sun power, water lazer vision, armour and he can see in the night. He is strong and his name is Strong Dude. He eats nothing but he drinks water. He has skinny legs and arms and two eyes on his head. - Matthew

My Playdough Alien has four eyes. He has four arms too and two legs. He runs really fast. He likes going invisible. He also doesn't like fruit. He lives in a jungle. Sometimes he jumps and he is always happy. He is fun to play with. He can make all kinds of things. Anyone would like him. He likes playing catch. - Tyler S

My Playdough Alien has two colours. It is blue and red and it has got three eyes, a golden body and four arms, two small and two long. He feels angry. He feels hard and he flies and he's got gold on him. His head has got a star on the top. - Wian

My Playdough Alien is blue and red and has four magic stars and two invisible diamonds. His favourite body part is the top bright blue star. He has got four arms that are yellow and white. He's got shiny eyes and white hands. He likes bouncing all around the floor and he can turn invisible. I like it when he turns into ice. He has two squares on his head that are green. He has got fragile teeth. He likes rolling on the carpet. - Remy

Healthy Teeth

Room 12 had a wonderful visit from Jane, a dental hygienist. (She's also Olivia's mum) She showed us how we could all keep our teeth healthy. We looked at X-rays of teeth and then we watched a movie that taught us about how to look after our teeth. Afterwards, we chewed little pink tablets that showed us where bacteria was hiding in our mouths. We asked so many questions and we learnt so much. Afterwards we reflected on what we had learnt and then we sorted the information into good and bad habits. Thank you Jane for teaching us how to keep our big beautiful smiles!

The Laughing Policeman

Sometimes it is fun just to have a good laugh! We are studying people that help us in our community. We had a chat with three wonderful police officers. We chose to put this song on the Blog to show a funny policeman, but we know their job is really quite serious. I am sure this will make you smile ...

Poem of the week

Our poem this week is called Snake's Skin. Atalia did a super job illustrating the poem. Great work, Atalia

Snake’s Skin

Snake said …
“I don’t feel right!
This skin I’m in is far too tight!
This skin I’m in, it doesn’t fit.
I’ll think I’ll wriggle
Out of it!”

Snake said …
“If you don’t mind,
This skin I’m in I’ll leave behind.
This skin I’m in, it doesn’t fit.”
And so he wriggled out of it!

Police Officers visit Room 12

Room 12 is investigating the people that help us in our community. To help us "Get" the information, we wanted to talk to the people in our community. The police came to visit us to tell us all about how they help to keep us safe. We are so lucky that they are also parents in our class. We asked many questions. We saw many of the tools that the police use.(We even put the hand cuffs on!) We sat in the police car and heard the siren and then spoke on the loud speaker. Our next learning step is to "Sort" the information. We learnt so much. Thank you for visiting our school!

We also thought that Jayden's poem was beautifully illustrated.

Topsy - Turvy Land

The people walk upon their heads,
The sea is made of sand,
The children go to school by night,
In Topsy - Turvy Land.

The front door step is at the back,
You’re walking when you stand,
You wear your hat upon your feet,
In Topsy - Turvy Land.

And buses on the sea you’ll meet,
While pleasure boats are planned
To travel up and down the streets
of Topsy - Turvy Land.

You pay for what you never get,
I think it must be grand,
For when you go you’re coming back,
In Topsy - Turvy Land.

Poem of the week

The class chose Poppy's poetry book this week. Look how beautifully she illustrated her poem. Well done Poppy!

What’s in my shoe?

I put on my shoe,
But it didn’t feel right.
My toe got tickled,
And my shoe was tight.

I took off my shoe,
And I looked inside –
A big, black spider
Was trying to hide.

I said to the spider,
“How are you?
What are you doing
In my shoe?”

I said to the spider,
“You can’t stay,
I have to wear
My shoe today.”

Poem of the week

Every week the class will vote for the Poetry book that they think best illustrates the poem of the week. This week the class voted for Charlotte's book. Well done, Charlotte!

The Billy Goats Gruff

Down by the river,
Live the Billy Goats Gruff.
The wool on their bodies,
Is just like fluff.

A grumpy old troll,
Who huffs and puffs,
Lives under the bridge,
Of the Billy Goats Gruff.

This grumpy old troll,
Wears fluffy earmuffs.
He hates the sound of
The Billy Goats Gruff.

He hears their hooves,
And sniffs and scoffs.
Then he bellows out loud,
"WOULD YOU GOATS CLEAR OFF!"
